Yes, that is our long time fellow kossack arabian’s “new” bionic foot. Those of us owned by cats know how they can suddenly appear between or beneath our feet. Last month, that is what arabian’s cat did. He’s fine. arabian? Not so much. In trying not to hurt her cat, she fell. The x-ray above shows the result. As her orthopedic surgeon said, the damage done to arabian’s foot was “devastating.”
arabian explained her injury in a kosmail.
What I did to my foot is called a Lisfranc Dislocation Fracture. In my case, apparently, I went to town. There are three main bones connecting the foot to the leg, I dislocated the left bone a lot, the right bone a little bit and pretty much all smashed up the middle bone. My doctor said that it was in so many little fragments he had to take some bone from my heel in order to repair it. He cut into the top of my foot and the side of my foot and because of the severity of the injury chose to go with a primary fusion surgery. Basically, yeah, he fused the bones back together.
The injury has left her unable to work for weeks. arabian’s paid leave has been used up and she is facing a mounting pile of bills with quickly vanishing funds. She explained her situation in a post she wrote last month.
I'm going to be very short of funds on my next two paychecks when I get back to work (which hopefully will be on the 19th...ironically my birthday). I've already paid out of pocket approximately $1500.00 and I still have more doctor visits, likely physical therapy and possible medical equipment. On top of that I'm not even 100% sure that my insurance is going to actually have covered what the surgeon/surgery center assumed they would pay for.
I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and I checked coverage out with them. It’s a $200 minimum. I have a $300 co-pay for the surgery + 10% cost of the surgery, + 10% cost for the surgeon and 10% cost for the anesthetist. Then of course I have to pay the co-pays for office visits and prescriptions. I’ve already paid over $100. I’ll also likely have to get a knee scooter. So the final cost for me looks like it could be in the thousands as this begins to add up and I likely won’t be getting at least one paycheck. I honestly have no idea how much this going to cost in the long run. I’m scared. I don’t have much saved and this is on top of regular bills due.
As any of us would be in this situation, she’s frightened. That’s never a good place to be when you’re trying to recover from surgery. And it just became worse. She saw her surgeon yesterday and learned that she will not be able to return to work until mid-September.
I am still at my sister's and now I won't be going back to work until September 15. So in addition to that being two more paychecks I'll be missing, I also have to pay HR $380.00 in order to keep my insurance and other benefits up. Yeah. So much fun. Needless to say it's been an emotional day.
An “emotional day?” The worry levels must have exploded. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. dkos friends of arabian have wondered if there was something we could all do to help her, literally, get back on her feet.
Why, yes. We can.
We can all chip in a little bit which will add up to some badly needed peace of mind for arabian. No small thing at any time, but especially when feeling so at risk and vulnerable.
