three fridays to go. hard to believe, but we are almost there.
i'm struggling to write this morning. so many things i want to say, and a complete inability to put them into words. so just a short anecdote that will be part of a more extensive future diary.
as most of you know, i went to visit my mom last week. she is 72 years old, has been divorced for 36 of those years. she is what you would call a “real old-school yankee”, in that she NEVER lets her feelings be known. as in NEVER. we have never talked politics. i knew she was “liberal”, however, i also knew that has its bounds.
we were talking, and we got on the subject of what women can do that they didn’t used to be able to do. the topic of cars came up. my mom went on to describe to me the feeling she got when at 68 years old, she went to the dealer and bought a car for the first time in her life. the look on her face when she was telling me how powerful she felt when the salesperson handed her they keys and said, “congratulations on your new car” was absolutely priceless to me.
i’m 53 years old. my mom has NEVER opened up to me the way she did when i saw her this time. the car purchase was before hillary, but she would not have shared it with me (along with many things i never thought i’d hear my mom say) if hillary hadn’t come along.
thank you hillary. thank you for giving a mother the confidence and pride of being a woman, and for making my mom allow herself to say what is on her mind. i have had a lot of “feel real good moments” in this election season. nothing comes close to my mom REALLY talking with me for the first time in my life.
as always, we need to hear from rep. cleaver.
kick back, pop open a cold one, pour it in 100% shattered glass, and have fun! we are going to win big, and we should enjoy the feeling.
