ARE YOU A CHAUVINIST?
As of today, the people who still support Trump's campaign to run our democracy and be the leader of the free world can be called Chauvinists. A little history is necessary. Nicolas Chauvin (possibly legendary/possibly real) was a French soldier under Napoleon who was decorated by Napoleon and given 200 Francs for his heroic service. Years later, the fact that Napoleon was a terrible man was known. It was widely accepted that Napoleon's delusions of ruling the world had caused massive death and destruction for the world and France.
The story goes that Chauvin continued to blindly support Napoleon and his campaigns of world war long after the truth was known and widely accepted. He continued to wear his medals and uniform and blather about the greatness of Napoleon. His blind allegiance make his name transform into a word in multiple languages that originally meant: to blindly support a stupid or ridiculous cause.
Due to common usage it became a term used for those who ridiculous believed that men are superior to women. Rudy Giuliani and the supporters who remain supporters after today are Chauvinists in the truest original sense. They blindly support someone who is widely accepted to be a ridiculous and destructive person. And the newer meaning certainly applies to these Chauvinists as well. Maybe a new phrase is in the making? Double Chauvinist, anyone?
