We have a golden chance to reform the Democratic party into a truly progressive party that will fight for things like, well like the Democratic platform from this year! Expanded Social Security, National Health Insurance, giant jobs program, stopping civilization ending Global Warming, campaign finance reform…
But I can see the clouds of danger already forming here at DailyKos. The anarchists are coming back. As one of the finest presidents ever has repeated often, don’t let the perfect get in the way of the good. While the lefts anarchists are saying, if I can’t get everything and get it now I’m going to burn the freaken house down and piss on the ashes!
The people who constantly repeat their mantra that Democrats and Republicans are both the same, who want an economy of barter without corporations rather than highly taxed and regulated corporations, who booed Elizabeth Warren and called her a traitor… are back! Didn’t we get enough of the extremely destructive false equivalency from the media during this campaign that we should have to hear it once again from these anarchists?
So how do we go about reforming the Democratic party so it becomes much more progressive without letting the anarchists hijack the party? To be honest with you, I think we’ve already got a good start with people like Warren and Al Franken, and Chris Murphy, and Keith Elison and Howard Dean… but we need to do more.
But before we can come together under this big tent, we’re going to have to be reasonable and rational. Let me toss out 2 premises that I think we need to except if we’re going to have a chance.
Compromise! There’s too many of us from far reaching backgrounds to expect that we’re all going to get everything we want.
Support! Support and work for the freaken candidates even though they’re not your perfect candidate.
We’re not going to get a truly progressive party overnight, but we can make more progress over the next several years than we’ve made since FDR.
To start, I think Nancy Pelosi is a good person with good intentions, but if we want to send a signal to the country that we are a new party that will lead America in a new direction, then Pelosi and Schumer have to go. It will be up to us to contact our Democratic representatives to let them know that the symbolism of Pelosi and Schumer are just too negative for a new party.
So let’s start the discussion of how to reform the Democratic party and make it more progressive. I’m not all that fond of the odds that we’re going to survive the authoritarian Plutocracy that is the GOP cult in power, so if we’re going down anyway, might as well go down fighting for descent, humane moral principles.
Remember, we’re not going to get everything overnight, but we can get an awful lot in very short time. So we’re in for a two front fight. We’re going to have to fight the GOP cult on one side, and the anarchists who would laugh as the “establishment” the “system” and the country burn to the ground.
