De Blasio has vowed to fight any effort by Trump to reinstitute the stop-and-frisk tactics found unconstitutional by a federal judge and deport “peaceful” undocumented immigrants.
I would love to hear this conversation:
They won’t be getting beers or playing golf together anytime soon, but Mayor de Blasio and President-elect Donald Trump agreed Monday to meet in person for what should be a blunt conversation about the city’s future.
During an appearance on NY1, de Blasio confirmed that he talked with Trump hours earlier in a “brief” phone call that he described as a “respectful conversation” with both acknowledging their “very different views.”
However, the actual face-to-face, which has yet to finalized, could be more heated, considering their mutual disdain.
“In a brief initial phone call, my job is to be respectful and to seek a dialogue,” the mayor said said.
“In an actual sit-down I think there has to be a blunter conversation.”
What level of coercion will Trump use to force his policies on New York City? de Blasio needs to go public with any threats. The world needs to know how far Trump is willing to go to start his lebensraum - the forced removal of millions of human beings. Some of us might be putting our own liberty on the line to stop deportations without the protections of a public office and the promise of great lawyers. We would appreciate a heads up so as to head off more Trump threats or more laws designed to punish people who work to thwart the cruel and unusual practice of ripping people from their homes of long standing because of prejudice and bigotry.
Stand with faith based groups including Quakers, Unitarians and Catholics who are long standing members of the Sanctuary Movement. Some of these brave people were prosecuted for helping those escaping wars in Guatemala and other places. If the mayors of this country and our Governors were as stout as these then Trump would soon just be a foul odor remembered vaguely! What they do keeps evil from prevailing, It allows us to fight back effectively against the dehumanizing terror of an autocracy!
Without resistance all may be lost. At best some of us may be lost. The costs will go down the more united and the more effectively we prevent Trump from his goals. When effective resistance always entails risk. Now more than most days we must be strong, have courage and do the right thing. We cannot let them win.
