So today, I made travel plans for my husband, my sister-in-law and me to travel to Washington DC for Inauguration Weekend through the following Wednesday.
Not sure what we’ll do on Inauguration Day (Jan 20) itself — I’m sure we’ll find something interesting to do :-)
Then the following day we’ll go to the Women’s March on Jan 21.
Then we’re planning to spend a few more days in town. I’d like to use it to do some networking — and ideally some strategic planning along the lines of the Indivisible Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda.
So if you’d like to meet up, reply to this diary or send me a Kosmail.
In the meantime — booking travel was VERY interesting!
I had looked into going to the 2008 Inauguration but I found things were all booked by the time I knew I was free (in 2012, I had a conflict).
This time, booking travel was easy.
I found a hotel in Alexandria, right on the Metro line at a reasonable price, that didn’t seem to be fully booked for that weekend. There was a lot of availability, and while the hotel rates were about 1.25X of the standard rate, that’s not exorbitant for a weekend with a major event.
And I was able to use Super-Saver frequent miles for two people for this trip flying directly into DC. I was prepared to fly/drive in from as far away as Philly, but no need to do that at all.
The airline seating chart for Thursday’s flight into National still had a lot of empty seats.
So — it’s entirely possible that this just reflects pressure on hotel rooms from the rise of AirBnB — or it could be that the Women’s March is going to outnumber Trump’s Inauguration crowd.
Of course, there are only so many people who can afford $25,000 minimum per ticket to spend the evening with his sons. . .
So make of it what you will. I thought it was interesting that booking travel to DC on Inauguration Weekend four weeks out was so easy and (relatively) inexpensive compared with my expectations.
And if you’ve put off making plans because you thought everything was booked already — please reconsider.
We’ll see you in DC!
