Tomorrow, the Axe Man comes, to cut down and prune and spray several trees. One of the Blue Spruces (pictured above) is too ill. They will also cut down a poorly sited Mountain (false) Ash and Mugo Pine. He will spray the Bart Pear and the small grafted apple tree. Here are the “before” pictures.
Welcome to Backyard Science’s The Daily Bucket. Please let us know what goes on around you in a comment. Your weather, the birds at your feeder, a pretty flower, your favorite tree, , are all fine topics. Please include your general area, and any related photos. We love photos!
This Blue Spruce is “declining” and needed expensive spraying. I liked it because it had a split trunk shape, which provided Feng Shui benefits. But it dropped tons of needles on the ornamental garden beneath it. It will be cut down.
Evil Spirits could not fit between this split trunk and approach the house.
The Mugo Pine simply grew too large for the side yard. I have to trim it severely to keep it out of the street, so it looks misshapen. The leafless Mountain Ash is left of it.
The low bushy tree is a Mugo Pine. The Mountain Ash is the tall leafless tree on the left, and the tall slender evergreen arborvitae is to the right. The Ash and Pine will come down. The arborvitae stays.
The Mountain Ash invaded via a seedling about 10 years ago. It did have berries for the birds, but it is now competing with the Frog Mitigation Area’s pear tree. That isn’t allowed.
The crown will be reduced on the Comice Pear tree in the FMA (below), taking it from about 30 to about 25 feet tall.
The Comice Pear to be trimmed is leafless, in the photo’s center, with a green kite hanging from it, and just to the right of the small white “bridge.”
We will be losing several trees. But we will be opening up spaces for new pretty plants underneath where the trees once grew, including new, smaller trees like this one:
A twisted Filbert. We’re looking for a mate for it.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN
What have you noted in your area or travels? As usual, please post your observations and general location in your comments. I’ll respond in between working on an endless list of garden chores.
