Just watched Hillary Clinton’s stump speech being delivered to much applause at the Republican Retreat in Philadelphia. It was simply delivered by British Conservative Party leader Theresa May.
it included all of the greatest hits:
- Need to do something for those that only FEEL left behind by globalization.
- Don’t trust Putin.
- Need to strengthen institutions, particularly international ones.
- Iran deal has stopped nuclear program.
- Tough on terror but don’t lump all Islam together.
- Pro-corporate.
Those are simply the ones that stuck out, it really and truly felt like Clinton’s stump speech with less emphasis on domestic issues.
The only real differences from Clinton’s stump speech was the open Reagan/Thatcher worship and some focus on bilateral trade instead of multinational agreements. In fact, the Republicans actually supported most of what she had to say, and it really did mirror a lot of what Clinton said on the trail.
I think her speech, a conservative British politicians speech, mirroring Clinton’s so strongly should give us Democrats some pause, something to chew on. Granted, Brtiain is a more liberal nation than we are in general terms, but the message from our liberal party leading candidate being nearly exactly the same as their conservative politician's pitch to Republicans should cause us to reflect on what we as a party actually represent.
Particularly since the Republicans did seem to enthusiastically applaud much of what she had to say on economics and globalization.
