A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.
If you are new to the site or have been lurking, we invite you to join in the friendly banter here. Don’t be shy, say anything, it will be well received.
[From navajo, Connect! Unite! Act! Editor: Please welcome palantir as our new CUA diarist for Sundays! I’m thrilled to announce him. Get ready for some learnin’ each week!]
I thought I’d never again diary storify on The Daily Kos. In truth I’ve posted some since the great disaster, but they were knock offs. No pain involved what so ever. This one stings a bit 😊. Painful because KosEdit doesn’t do what any decent html editor should do—what I want it to do—and if it can’t it should let me code it. For me it is about the words and the design, truth and beauty. I promise as I start this I’ll try with these limited tools to make that happen here but, ultimately, I write to inform and amuse. If I do not at least I hope you find this useful.
It occurred to me that you might find the Unicode system and emoji in particular an interesting topic to explore. Your smart-phone may be the most common and best interface to the emoji Unicode character set and the best way to view this article. Computer based web browsers are generally less than competent at rendering emoji.
Unicode is, if you don’t know, a system that is trying to encode all the character sets in the world! A system that makes it possible for computer systems everywhere to convey information in any any alphabet or logographic system. It allows you to send <H1> 😼 </H1> (which will no doubt not make ‘Cat Face With Wry Smile’ bigly—damn you 5, damn you to hell 😇. Ok Kos, I’ll put it on a line all by itself. )
to your sister in Des Moines after she admits that voting for Trump might not have been such a good idea. She will, of course, text you back

I had to do that to make KosEdit behave 😞. You might notice that it still doesn’t.
The combination of Unicode characters and a little imagination can be quite entertaining.
Here are some sites where you can cut and paste your favorites into your dKos comments to amaze your friend and confuse your foes.
If you’re wondering how all the alphabets and logographic sets in the world (including Linear A) could possibly be encoded into a system that is easy to compute and open to new character sets and most importantly more emoji the following video by Tom Scott techsplains it all. It truly is a brilliant hack.
Each code—an enumeration—maps to a symbol which can be a simple character bitmap or a more complex full color picture bitmap. Unfortunately, each application can implement their own bitmaps to map to. When the bitmap is a letter or pictograph the representation is constrained to being legible. When it is an emoji the application isn’t as constrained—a picture conveys its own meaning independently. This is why this article will render differently on your iphone, or android phone, Firefox or Chrome or Safari or …
If you’d like to create your very own Bitmoji there’s an app for that (mien gott that’s so cliche now). Point your phone to Android or Apple app stores (it’s free). I don’t get it, but it seems like a thing.
What the heck, I’ll be a cartoon too!

Well there you have it. Hope I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.
Thanks.
By the way, if you haven’t visited The Inoculation Project yet this morning or ever, please do. It’s a shot that doesn’t hurt at all and is an important community effort. If you can donate that would be excellent. If you can’t donate just drop in and say hello to belinda ridgewood and nomandates.
And now, a message from our sponsors
Our team is here to provide support and guidance to new and existing volunteer leaders of each regional and state group, helping them with recruiting, organizing and executing social and action events. We invite you to join in this effort to build our community. There are many ways to pitch in. If there isn't a group to join near you, please start one.
