As his constituent, I called Paul Ryan’s office several times during the election season to urge him to strongly rebuke the various awful things that Trump said or did during the campaign. (Ryan either issued no rebukes or mild rebukes, and subsequently endorsed Trump.) His staff said that they would pass my messages along to him. I usually concluded my conversations with his staff with this warning:
“As a Democrat, I hope that Trump doesn’t get the nomination/get elected. However, if he does, not only will he be an awful president, he will be Paul Ryan’s worst nightmare.”
Really. I said that. A number of times. I’m thinking of calling his office again and saying, “Remember that lady who kept calling last summer saying that Trump would be Ryan’s worst nightmare? See, he should have listened to me. Do I get a prize or anything for being right?”
