What “Most Likely To ______” Award Would You Win?
Oh, dear, it’s that time of year again...school graduations and awards time.
And along with these times...those dreaded “Most Likely To ___________” awards:
And the superlative awards are getting even more offensive. Just days after a student received an award stating they were most likely to be a terrorist, another student was given an even more equally offensive award at the same school.
Sydney Caesar, a student at Anthony Aguirre Junior High School in Texas, received an award that stated she was “Most Likely to Blend in With White People,” from her college-prep teacher Stacey Lockett.
Apparently, this was at the same school where an award was given out to a student who was “Most Likely to become a Terrorist”
Lauren Easton, whose sister received the "white people" award, told CNN there were others, including one that read "Most Likely to be Homeless in Guatemala."
"My initial reaction was shock," Easton said. "I couldn't believe a teacher could be that bold." She says her sister was initially embarrassed and just wanted everyone to "drop it."
Lizeth Villanueva, who was bestowed the unwanted "terrorist" honor,
told CNN affiliate KPRC the teacher gave out different "mock awards" to students in her advanced learning class. The teacher told them they were supposed to be funny but they "might hurt [students'] feelings."
The school has issued an apology for these awards
Leaving aside the offensiveness of these “awards,” my second thought was, “What are teachers doing making these determinations in the first place?”
I always thought that teachers and administrators approve (or not) of the specific categories to be voted on by the students whereas surveys for mock categories like the ones at this junior high school are generated by students in a fun, sarcastic yet frequently cruel and hurtful way (for example, I can easily picture myself winning something like a “most likely to blend with white people” award if voted on by my peers in an “off the books” election generated and voted on by my peers!)
In the mock election in my junior high school, my junior high school class voted me...Most likely to become President of the United States...I thought that was nice at the time but I would have rather had the “class clown” award or “Most likely to become a comedian” award or something.
I do remember that in high school I once made a “most hated list...” so it’s not as if I haven’t made lists like this that...really affected and hurt me…
I simply wouldn’t expect school teachers and administrators for my well-being and education to hand me a certificate for mock categories that were so cruel.
Today’s question: Yeah, we remember those “Most likely to...” list from our school days, don’t we? You were voted most likely (or not likely!) to _____________________?
