A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.
If you are new to the site or have been lurking, we invite you to join in the friendly banter here. Don’t be shy, say anything, it will be well received.
Early last week, a friend of mine asked me to assist him in taking some books to a used book store.
Overall, they were some really, really nice old books...old books that even then had gone though various reprints.
I’m talking about you could see the ‘’cut pages’’ and feel the letters on the pages type of books...largely reprints, not at all rare, but good stuff.
So...out of one of the books, a 4-page newspaper falls out.
The newspaper (called The Ironbridge Chronicle and dated ‘’Summer 1895”) was not at all brittle, as I might have expected.
And so, I opened up the newspaper, very carefully, somewhat eager to read its contents and what should I see but a notice of the trial of Oscar Wilde...or ’’Ocar Wilde.’’
Now, of course, I have read a number of accounts of the trial of Oscar Wilde but never an account of the Wilde trial as it was covered at that time.
A few other notices in the paper caught my eye including a blurb on the military degradation of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, the death of Louis Pasteur (a curious notice since September 28, 1895 was a Friday and not a Saturday as the paper reported, M. Pasteur was 72 and not 74, as TIC indicated and...this was in a summer issue?), the marriage of the Duke of Marlborough, a vegetarian conference in Birmingham, and a wonderfully titillating (at least to me) headline:
THE WORKHOUSE NURSE CHARGED WITH THEFT
...which sounds as if it could be some sort of dastardly Victorian crime that only Sherlock Holmes can solve...well, Sherlock wasn’t supposed to be alive in 1895…
As of this writing, I am aware that at least one of the issues of The Ironbridge Chronicle was reprinted in the 1980’s and I suspect that what I held in my hand and took pictures of was probably a facsimile as well. But it sure was awfully fun reading.
Today’s question: Tell us about something interesting...but not necessarily valuable that you found once upon a time.
Our CUA team is here to provide support and guidance to new and existing volunteer leaders of each regional and state group, helping them with recruiting, organizing and executing social and action events. We invite you to join in this effort to build our community. There are many ways to pitch in. If there isn't a group to join near you, please start one.

Data & Democracy for 2018 - a southeastern strategy conference for voting rights activists + progressive technologists
Conference web site: https://DataDemocracyConference.org
Date: Saturday, September 23, 2017; 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Venue: The PSI Theatre at the Durham Arts Council, 120 Morris St., Durham NC
Tickets: $30 by advance online registration only
Theme and Goal: To provide an opportunity for southeastern (and particularly North Carolina) progressive activists + volunteer professional technologists to connect and to think through, together, what are the opportunities and the needs for "data-driven activism" (activists and technologists working together) in preparation for the 2018 election, with an emphasis on voting rights and get-out-the-vote (GOTV).
Program Format: Keynote speech, followed by a combination of mini-presentations (15-20 min + Q&A) highlighting activists' use of data, plus panel discussions on the broad topics of Coalition Building, Data and Activism for GOTV, and Strategy. Panel discussions will be unscripted conversations, seeded as necessary by a facilitator's questions and audience input. Weather permitting, an extended lunch break at a close-by urban mini-park will provide audience members and speakers the opportunity for freewheeling discussions.
