Good evening, Kibitzers!
Some Mondays are harder than others. When I have somewhere else to be all Sunday including Sunday evening, that leaves a lot of stuff to be done Monday evening. And then additional stuff swoops in like a plague of owls, and it’s all over. Why yes, I could plan better. But in this case, I did not.
So anyway, there were a couple of things I thought I might write about for today, but I have run out of time to do any of them justice, and so I don’t have much in the way of content. Please, talk amongst yourselves. Well, no; I will be here at posting time. Maybe not coherent, but here. If I scratch cryptic runes, you’ll know why. (Maybe not how. I guess I could use emojis in place of cryptic runes. Same basic idea.)
In Ireland, you go to someone's house, and she asks you if you want a cup of tea. You say no, thank you, you're really just fine. She asks if you're sure. You say of course you're sure, really, you don't need a thing. Except they pronounce it ting. You don't need a ting. Well, she says then, I was going to get myself some anyway, so it would be no trouble. Ah, you say, well, if you were going to get yourself some, I wouldn't mind a spot of tea, at that, so long as it's no trouble and I can give you a hand in the kitchen. Then you go through the whole thing all over again until you both end up in the kitchen drinking tea and chatting.
In America, someone asks you if you want a cup of tea, you say no, and then you don't get any damned tea.
I liked the Irish way better.

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by and tell us about your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper. Newcomers may notice that many who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well. |
