There’s a lot going on in the world, I know. The Twit-in-Chief needs a good spanking and to have his phone taken away. We’re more concerned with protecting rich billionaires from losing a few dollars than we are protecting children from being murdered by weapons of war. And a thousand topics far more worthy than what’s been on my mind for the past two days, ever since a friend brought it up on conversation. If you’re up for discussing an issue that divides people (even in my OWN HOUSEHOLD)… grab a stiff drink, check out the words from our sponsor, and hop below the Story Break...
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
Let’s start with a guided meditation. Get comfortable, close your eyes, and listen to the sound of my voice… think about your bed, your comfy, wonderful bed that you don’t get to spend nearly enough time sleeping in because Life. Imagine getting ready for a restful night’s sleep… walk to your bed, fluff the pillow, grasp the blanket or comforter to pull it back and slip beneath…
IS THERE A TOP SHEET BETWEEN THE BLANKET OR
COMFORTER AND THE BOTTOM SHEET???!
In my world, there is ALWAYS a top sheet between me and my comforter. That comforter has a cover, but when I make my bed it always has a bottom sheet… top sheet… covered comforter. That’s how I make all the beds in my house, and my kids have grown up with top sheets. Which, to my utter horror, end up crumpled at the bottom of the bed or over on the side of the bed while their sleeping bodies rest directly under their blankets/comforters.
In the discussion my friend was having, people kept chiming in and it seemed the general trend was no top sheet. Looking for validation of my position I asked Mr. Brillig, who for the past 25 years has been sharing my top sheet. His response?
“I TOLD you years ago, I don’t need a top sheet at all. That’s why we have comforter covers.”
Everyone has a reason for their choice:
- The duvet cover means we just wash that, so we don’t need to use a top sheet.
- The top sheet keeps me from touching the scratchy blanket.
- A top sheet keeps the monsters under the bed away.
- I get tangled up in the top sheet so don’t use it.
- I get too warm with the top sheet.
- Sheets are sold in sets and I’m not wasting anything so we use the top sheet.
A little sleuthing on the Interwebs informed me that two words I’ve used interchangeably for decades do not actually mean the same thing. A Comforter is a warm item that sits on top of your sheets (plural, ie there’s a Top Sheet and a Bottom Sheet) and that can go in the washer. A Duvet is a down/feather/down-alternative item that is placed inside a duvet cover and used without a Top Sheet. Casa Brillig has Duvets. And Top Sheets. On the same beds. I gather there’s a kerfluffle about multiple possible criminal violations concerning hush money paid by the Twit’s lawyer to an adult film star but I’ve been distracted by the likelihood I’ve been Doing Bedding All Wrong.
So tell me, dear readers… do you use a Top Sheet or sleep under the comforter/blanket/duvet? Does it matter what season it is? Do tell!! After you peruse what you come to TOP Comments for every night- the Comment Mojo Picture trio formatted tonight by BeninSC!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.

This comment, from JeffW in annieli’s diary about Trump’s latest half-baked idea about having the military pay for the border wall.
Hilarious, because of France’s ineffective “Maginot Line” to stop German invasion during WWII.

In a nice karmic twist, is this comment by Silent Spring about maturely accepting the leadership and guidance and passion of our young citizens in this remarkable time. Appreciating all that goes into it. (#durratiwin)
