A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.
If you are new to the site or have been lurking, we invite you to join in the friendly banter here. Don’t be shy, say anything, it will be well received.
When the year began and analysts started circling potential big box office successes, Jurassic World was near the top as a potential blockbuster for the summer. And while Jurassic World looks to do solid business - $145M is nothing to sneeze at, it's nowhere near the 180M from "Incredibles" or the big take from Infinity War or Deadpool 2.
One of the most underrated stories at the box office isn’t about success, but about outright failure. When John Travolta trotted out his gangster film Gotti he accomplished a rare trick — a movie so universally loathed it began to challenge for worst major distribution, ever. Travolta has been there before, with prior flop “Battlefield Earth” but Gotti took on a whole new storyline as the film, which is continuing to be a spectacular failure, started to strike back at critics with what some critics are calling “Trumpian tactics”. Vox brought up the bad news:
It then screened for a very small set of critics (I was not invited to any screenings), who found it so awful that it wound up with the rare 0 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and a damning-by-faint-praise 24 on Metacritic.
But the film’s marketers have fought back, launching an offensive that doesn’t just suggest but outright accuses critics of mounting a coordinated hit on the movie.
That’s right. A film with reviews this bad is having a fight over, well bad reviews. It may be that the scorching reviews are leaving some marks. As an example, according to the New York Post: “I'd rather wake up next to a severed horse head than ever watch "Gotti" again”. I’d, well, go see something else.
This week in Streaming Media
The movie theaters got you down? This week in streaming Netflix and Amazon drop a large number of summer vacation titles, from movies to new series.
On Netflix, Tuesday marks the debut of “Secret City” season 1, and on Friday, GLOW Season 2, the story of women’s wrestling makes has it’s premiere on Friday. Not your style? Netflix is also premiering full seasons of “Kiss Me First” a young adult drama, and animated series “Harvey Street Kids”. Still not your style? Netflix Friday drop brings even more, from the movie “Tau” to the series “Churchhill’s Secret Agents”.
Over on Amazon this week, we see the premiere of “A Very English Scandal”. And over on Hulu, The Handmaid’s tale moves into the final episodes of Season 2.
New in Music
We’re still in the summer swing on the pop side, with new music dropping from Ariana Grande, Little Mix rolling out their single with Cheat Codes “Only You”, and even Paul McCartney dropping what he is calling a “double A side” release, featuring “Come On To Me”
New in Books
We are in the middle of a summer with a ton of inside the Trump White House books, exposes, political writings that will flood bookshelves. While that can occupy your reading, you might find it a bit more satisfying on the soul (and, frankly, your nerves) to disappear a bit each week into some solid fiction.
Wait, still want something non-fiction to read? Check out David Hogg’s #NeverAgain book, containing stories of the students of Parkland.
At my house, though, just to unwind, I’m going to grab a picture book and laugh, as this week sees the release of “Cats on Catnip”
What’s on your schedule this week?
