I remember going down the road and playing various games, counting a particular type of car or cows or billboards with “X” on them. Now there were five kids in the car with an eight year spread so either somebody was left out of the game or the oldest ones always won. But my dad preferred driving at night when we were going a long distance, say 200-300 miles, so the game he preferred us to play was; “Go to sleep!” (We were usually riding in a station-wagon. This was way before mini vans.)
I remember driving down to Miami (from Winston-Salem) once, it was the early 60s so Interstate Highway driving was limited, mostly US Highways. But it was the US Highways that allowed us to have the best counting games because they cut across where people lived. If you did get on the Interstate Highway they were so new they were pristine, no billboards and hardly anything even at the exits. If you got off you usually had to drive towards some town for a bit to find a gas station or place to eat, usually the local diner or a truck-stop.
So what were some of the games you played when you were a kid traveling with your parents? And what were some of the games your kids played on your long trips? At some point I know the kids quit looking out the windows and started playing electronic games, the first that I recall was GameBoy.
And OMG! if your kids didn’t have one.
There was one small advantage of traveling at night, we got to see pieces of movies as we passed the multitude of Drive-In Movie theaters along US Highways. It was never much, but as a kid it was fun. If we were lucky we’d stop at some gas station to fill-up and we would get out of the car and actually hear snippets of sound across the highway. WOW!
Just a little note. I’ll be traveling today. I’ll try to check in. Going some place with wolves and water or something like that.
