Every single candidate is going to have to refine and re-refine their stances. Never was more evident than the town halls last night.
A perfect example was the question of “Should incarcerated felons get the right to vote?” I don’t like this question. It’s a trick one. But we have open the rabbit’s hole on this one.
The answer is not yes or no. It’s nuanced.
Do I think felons should be able to vote while in prison? Yes, non-violent.
Simple and easy. You would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t want a shoplifter to vote.
Violent crimes is a different issue.
Take a look at the Florida Amendment:
Florida voters took a massive step in restoring voting rights to former felons. Amendment 4 automatically reinstates voting rights for people with felony convictions upon completion of their sentences, including prison, parole and probation. Excluded are those convicted of murder or a felony sexual offense.
Floridians did not restore voting rights to people convicted of murder or sex offensives. I don’t think that is too controversial. Warren and Harris played it safe. Both said a variation of “we will look into this policy”.
This morning #BostonBomber is trending on twitter but with people on the right fear-mongering that Sanders is going to let the Boston Bomber vote everyone AND people on the left trying to beat Buttigieg over the head with his no answers.
Nuance is going to matter in this election. Don’t make attack ads for your opponents.
