The latest justification for not impeaching is that we need to hear from Mueller (again).
First off, didn’t we already put all of our eggs in Mueller’s basket? Second, we did hear from Mueller. 400+ pages worth. And he basically threw the ball back into Congress’ court. What more does Mueller have to say for you to act?
Third, there's zero reason for us to believe that Mueller will be a hero. Even if you believe that he was simply following DOJ policy with regard to (not) indicting trump, what's his excuse for not indicting Don Jr? It’s true that Mueller wrote a letter to Barr disagreeing with his characterization of the report—but did Mueller alert Congress? No. Did he alert the media? No, but I think a super frustrated member of his team did. When I look at Mueller’s actions, I think it's much more likely that Mueller is just another republican flake who doesn't approve of trump's actions and tweets, but likes the SCOTUS picks.
Don't get me wrong, I would love for Mueller to take the stand and systematically take down the entire trump regime in front of an audience of millions. But many of us have never even heard Mueller speak. We have no idea what's going through his mind. And now the latest is that he's going to start singing like a bird when he's finally retired from the DOJ. OK, fine. Keep hoping. But Mueller testifying should NOT determine the democrats’ next steps. We don't need Mueller to sign off on whether or not trump has committed multiple impeachable offenses over the past 3 years. It's time for us and our party to take the lead and stop waiting for Mueller and other republicans to do the right thing. We can't control their actions but we can control our own actions.
In 5 years, McConnell and other repubs can do a complete 180 and say that they would have voted for impeachment if only the democrats had done the right thing and started the process. That’s why it’s so important to do the right thing and get everyone on record. I applaud Senator Warren for her leadership today.
