The Democratic Party is trying to do something incredibly important and serious at this moment in our history. They are trying to bring the laws of our land into effect in regards to the very corrupt and illegal use of power being wielded by the current administration. The Trump administration has closed up like most bullies do when being called to stand up and face the people they’ve wronged. Stonewalling and all, legal, attempts to get information from this swampy pool of cess has been an exercise in frustration. On Wednesday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke with The Washington Post’s Robert Costa, for a Washington Post Live segment. Asked about the very possible chance that Trump’s Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will deny Congress’s requests for Trump tax returns, Pelosi was humorous, but also cutting.
Moderator: How far can you go on that front, Speaker Pelosi? Could you hold the Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin in contempt? Some Democrats have even raised the prospect of arresting the treasury secretary if he does not comply with congressional demands.
Pelosi: Let me just say that we do have a small jail down in the basement of the Capitol. But if we were arresting all of the people in the administration we would have an overcrowded jail situation, and I'm not for that.
Pelosi continues that every step the Democratic Congress is taking has nothing but legal precedent behind it. Every legal step comes one after the other and the Trump administration can pretend otherwise but that does not make their position any more legal. In fact, it exposes the corrupt nature of authoritarianism.
