Every once in a while I get cranky about certain books. I want to love them and I have paid good amounts of money to read them and spent a lot of time not only reading them, but thinking about what they mean. So I need to unload some thoughts and I hope you will also in the comments.
...
I am concerned about books getting to the heart of the matter and not just fiddling around for page after page. One book that I finished recently is beautifully written and I will be putting it on my list of the best books I read in 2019.
But…
The book had a least three separate plots to get to the heart of with associated red herrings some of which were so important they may also have been plots. It was too much.
...
Another book which is part of a series I have been reading for many years went on for 400 pages of talk, talk, talk, talk. Then there was a bit of action after a lot of walking. I wanted to scream. I am still upset.
...
A book that I just finished reading is also a series story with several characters I care about. We are following all of them plus a few others. But the authors took the heart of the book, the main character in the previous books, out of this one, and set him aside. Sure, he is doing something which we will discover before the end of the book, but he is just pretty much gone and it is an empty feeling. I am bored.
...
When the authors draw their story boards do they think about how the reader feels being marched around from place to place without continuity? Pratchett’s Jingo is going into the give away sack for all the reasons mentioned above.
...
You may be wondering then what book I would approve of and of course it is A Gentleman in Moscow by Towles that gets that vote. The character who is the heart of the book and the action is superb. Schaefer’s Shane is another example as is Gandalf in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.
...
Has some book disappointed you? Are you considering dropping a series you used to love?

I got a note in the mail from Youffraita that she wanted me to share.
She has lost the net again because the person she was paying a share to for it was not paying the bills and they turned it off. She got ripped off. Sadly, she would have to have someone wire her room to get it back and then pay full price. It doesn’t sound good. She did say she can watch dvd’s and was enjoying The Favourite at the moment.
I will write back to her, of course, if anyone wants to send a message.
