Good News: We bring it, we make it.
The Good Gnus group is a community of readers, writers, activists, supporters, community builders, and patriots. We begin gathering every day at 7 a.m. ET to celebrate national good news. Our most active members are of course a subgroup of members of Daily Kos, whose Front Pages celebrate “News, Community, Action.” However, you don’t have to be a member of Daily Kos to be a Newsie.
We are realists, not fools, idiots, or ostriches. We know we live in a world where active, nefarious, and evil decision-makers do very bad things and create stress and anxiety in us, our loved ones, our friends, our allies, and our neighbors, yet we choose to focus on the good news that people create around the country. Sometimes we ourselves create Good News. Together we are strong and resilient. We return to these pages day after day to drink water and bathe, sample the smorgasbord, and vitalize our souls.
How We Doin' On That Green Energy Thing? Better Than You Might Expect!
Somewhat encouraging news for the prospects of human survival! Over at Vox, David Roberts offers a brief review of data from the "Renewables Global Status Report," an annual report on the world's use of renewable energy from a great big energy think tank, the "Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century." And the story, as he presents it in 12 graphs, is that we hu-mons are not doomed to Global Warm ourselves to death.
✂
We're only starting to move in the right direction -- or maybe only starting to move away from the wrong direction. It will need national, collective efforts (although individual efforts help!) But hooray, it can actually be done -- go read Roberts's graphs and dare to be a little hopeful, won't you? [Wonkette]
Former President Jimmy Carter Just Made a Solar Farm to Power Half His City
Carter leased 10 acres of land in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, to be used as a solar farm. This February, the solar development firm SolAmerica finally completed the project, which will have the capacity to meet more than half of the town’s energy needs.
✂
“Distributed, clean energy generation is critical to meeting growing energy needs around the world while fighting the effects of climate change,” Carter said in a SolAmerica press release. “I am encouraged by the tremendous progress that solar and other clean energy solutions have made in recent years and expect those trends to continue.” [Futurism.com]
I enjoyed karij’s opening on Wednesday:
“Good morning residents of Gnuville!
“I know many of us are itching until our skin is red to get the orange blowhard the heck out of Kansas. He had his big bigotry rally in Florida, where he is polling below a few Dem candidates BTW, so now he probably feels like his sharts are the best sharts and no other shart could possibly beat him. Whatever side of the fence you sit on for “locking him the F up”, please remember, he is not winning, no where near winning. I write this for you as much as for myself, these are trying times. I want my government back, I want the twitter fingers in zip ties to never have the ability to tap the keyboard again. I believe we will get there. I believe and I want you to believe. Because if we do not believe will not triumph then we will lose our will to fight. And we need to fight! I feel so sorry for the color orange but the narcissistic mango man child must be defeated. Our tool is not only our vote but our Dem’s using the law. And the law can take time but the justice resulting from utilizing the law will land on our side!” [And her title is good, too: Never Mistake Law for Justice. Justice is an Ideal, and Law is a Tool.]
About the Immigrant/Border Situation
The Lawyers for Good Government Foundation offers concrete ways to help people in the detention camps:
elenacarlena’s diary lists many action steps.
Due to an apothecarial emergency yesterday, I was unable to directly support immigrants in my city (Detroit). But my email to my Indivisible group caught the eye of an activist friend, and she took my place and distributed vital information to immigrants (as listed in my diary).
