Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
Please do not attack Democratic candidates or drag primary fights into our community.
The 2020 election is critical on so many levels. Regaining control of the U.S. Senate is a huge task that faces us. We all need to pull together to achieve this and offer what we can. Ann and I are offering a couple quilts for fundraising for two Senate races.
I see friendship quilts as a symbol of unity of purpose. The Community Quilt Project’s community quilts are one type. But another type is a quilt that is signed by participants at an event. We’ve done several at Netroots Nation and it’s predecessor, Yearly Kos. Why, in 2006 in Las Vegas, Sen. Harry Reid signed one of our quilts!
Things being what they are, this year we are going big. We are making two quilts, both in the “Ocean Waves” pattern that we used for Joel Silberman’s community quilt. Joel passed away last year from cancer and he will be greatly missed at Netroots Nation where he served on the Board.
The quilt patches are going to Netroots Nation in the capable hands of Loggersbrat. You can recognize her in a crowd by her signature red hat. I am hopeful a friend from Kentucky will be helping as well — but more on that later...
Such a friendship quilt, itself, is a neat thing — an artifact of a meeting of the like-minded, with representation of people from all walks of life, some of them famous. But we take it a step further. A drawing will be held for each quilt after they are finished. Act Blue pages will be set up for each quilt, one for the Senate race in Maine, one for the Senate race in Kentucky. Over the period of a month of diaries about each race will feature links to Act Blue. Donations will earn chances in a drawing for the quilt — as will short essays on a given topic (an equal chance to enter without money). In the past, enthusiasm was so high that other people volunteered prizes, as well.
Let’s have some fun. It is much, much better than crying, anyday.
The weekend begins now. Come in to the kitchen, make yourself comfortable, and tell friends about your day, your weekend plans, your menus! This is an open thread.
