Let's be honest. Outside of political junkies like us, nobody is watching this s**t. They don't care. Everyone has already made up their mind.
You’ve either:
A) Bought in to the entire Fox News line of "Sore loser Dems are out to get our awesome president Trump."
B) Known what a piece of s**t he was since day one.
C) Decided you don't care because since none of it is keeping you from getting to work on time or watching Netflix, it's all just noise.
I'm done.
I'm done watching the entire Republican party run cover for a shamelessly incompetent and criminal president, look the entire country in the eye and basically say "Ha! F*ck you. What are you gonna do about it?"...and the answer is nothing. The Democratic representatives we've entrusted to speak for us and act on our behalf are gutless prigs. It's the same Jocks vs. Nerds playground scuffle it's always been. They say a lot of nice words and make plenty of solemn condemnations that make for great sound bites that we can all share with each other, but it doesn't matter. They can lean into the letter of the law and proclaim their unyielding devotion to the truth, but it doesn't matter. They can righteously pick apart all of the laughably contrived and outright false counter arguments as much as they like. It doesn't matter. IT. DOESN'T. MATTER. This has been made abundantly clear. The Republicans are lying, they're cheating, and they're going to get away with it.
Yeah, we all pretty much knew how this was all going to play out, but it doesn't make it any less abjectly heartbreaking.
And when you jump up and down and scream about it outside of this nice little liberal echo chamber.....people don't care. And they won't care until disaster is at their front door. By then it will be too late to do anything about it.
Will I donate time and funds to my favorite candidate? Yes. Will I vote? Of course. But I'll really just be going through the motions. Elizabeth Warren isn't going to be president. Bernie Sanders isn't going to be president. If Trump doesn't manage to win reelection (which is still very much a possibility...because none of the likely Democratic nominees exactly cut an inspiring profile....and the infighting and self sabotage has already begun in earnest.…..and Hillary…..*sigh*.…...f**king Hillary) what can we look forward to? Four to 8 years of doddering old Uncle Joe's corporate centrist glad handing and obstruction, obstruction, obstruction. No Medicare for all, no end to the wars in the Middle East, no movement on climate change, and guns for everyone.
Call my rep? I live in a deep blue state. I don't have the mental energy for a doe eyed round of "Yay! Go you!" with someone who already agrees with me.
Donate to my favorite red state Dem? The change that needs to happen is on a scale that's going to take immeasurably more than depositing 20 bucks in someone’s GoFundMe who will most likely lose to the Guns, Babies n' Jesus candidate anyway.
Take to the streets with our silly hats and clever signs? First we get ignored, then we get mocked, then once the fervor has died down they go ahead and do whatever they were going to do anyway.
I love my child with every fiber of my being, but I'd be lying if I said a small part of me doesn't regret bringing them into this hopelessly broken world. If I didn't have friends and family obligations keeping me here, I'd move out of this country altogether. Because it's not worth fighting for..it just isn't. The bad guys own it.
"We just need to all show up in November." F*ck November. Because I honestly don't think we have that long. I don't see any way we don't get out of this without some kind of large scale violent confrontation. I believe that one way or another, war is coming.
Apologies for the doom and gloom. I know this sort of fatalism isn't very popular around here. I'd love to be proved wrong, but I've found that whenever I lower my expectations....I'm rarely disappointed.
