In the midst of this COVID-19 crisis — which will not end any time soon — we all are focused on shortages, wondering if we have the virus, asking where can we get hand sanitizer, and on and on and on. In all this, let’s not forget to thank the people working to make it happen.
Last Friday, at the only grocery store in my rural Virginia county, the shelves were empty of toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, bleach, and all the other usual things. I was in line with apples, wine, buttermilk, wine, pork tenderloin, wine and tonic water (you know — the IMPORTANT stuff). Customer ahead of me started giving the cashier then the store manager a ration of shit about empty shelves. No matter what they said in reply, this clown went on and on, finally left.
Several of us thanked the store manager and the cashiers for all they do for us.
I’m the captain of one of the two volunteer rescue squads in the county. I just finished a meeting with all my people. Told them, if anyone is uncomfortable, tell me and I’ll excuse you from responding to calls. When responding to any calls with cough, flu-like symptoms, etc., we have to mask, put on the coveralls and shoe covers, mask the patient. When we return, we have to swab down the ambulance interior with a hot water—bleach mixture; wipe down the equipment with bleach wipes; used masks and coveralls go into a red medical waste bag for disposal; after which we go home wondering if we are now sick.
Then, there are the cops. They go to an domestic where someone is beating someone, don’t have time to mask and don coveralls — then a drunk asshole spits on them
The folks working at the grocery, hardware, pharmacy, doc’s office, hospital, EMS, law enforcement . . . all are exposing themselves. Tell them THANK YOU!!!
