In twelve hours the official time will come and go. I had heard the myth about balancing eggs during either equinox most of my life. My mother kept me and my siblings busy for hours, twice a year, attempting this “natural phenomenon”. In the title photo, I used several alabaster, one brass, a few painted wooden and papier-mache eggs to prove the point shown in the short video below.
But that’s not the point. I had to prove or debunk the theory for my own satisfaction. Here are my results. The picture below was taken 20 hours after the equinox last Fall. Two fresh eggs and one carved wooden egg standing on my kitchen counter top.
Mona Lisa smirks at the idea.
Two days later, I tried on a different surface. The bathroom sink and a few nick-knacks complete the setting.
Four days later, with a seldom used nut cracker as a backdrop, I chose the counter beside the stove to balance eggs.
The end of my experiment was done in the kitchen next to the sink. I was able to stand eggs on end with the fat end and narrow end down a week after the equinox. Eggs balanced on the narrow end took longer because of the smaller surface area of contact. The counter top was washed and there were no obstructions or aids (glue, salt grains, etc) to assist my experiment.
I laugh at the antics.
In conclusion, try this at home. Entertain guests at parties or small children with hours of fun (though sometimes frustrating and messy). Help keep this traditional farce alive. Here is a photo from Life magazine 1945 reprinted (by the South China Post magazine) on the Chinese New Year 2019.
You’re never too old to have fun with friends.
That’s all I have for today. I hope you find your own inner balance. I almost forgot my daily bug.
This Bumblebee decided my Holly hedge was the perfect place for a snack.
Thanks for stopping by today. Come visit again and stay longer, if you can.
