It's NOT that we LOVE incremental change.
It's NOT cuz Democrats are the same as Republicans
It's NOT cuz Democrats don't care.
It’s NOT because Democrats are NeoLiberal
It's that the Left and young don't care enough to show up and help the Democratic President so they can enact the policies you voted them in for.
What do I mean by this?
After Obama was elected in 2008, the following Midterms the young failed to show up.
2010
An estimated 20.9% of young Americans under the age of 30 voted in 2010 midterm electionThis handed the GOP the House, saddling Obama with a GOP Congress for his next 6 YEARS.
PRIOR to the 2018 Midterm, the highest turnout percentage for the youth vote in midterms is 21%, which happened in 1986.
Now... let's turn to the MOST important Midterms of our entire lives.
There are CHILDREN in cages, laws being ignored, the wealthy got another tax cut, and the Supreme Court was handed to the MOST Conservative men Trump could find.
How did the 18-29 year olds respond?
I am so SICK and tired of the The Left complaining about lack of health care, climate change, student loans, housing prices, the stagnant minimum, wage, etc.. etc... yet, they fail to come out to vote to TRY to make their lives better.
Sine 1992 we've had a Democratic President for 16 whole years.
Of that 16 yrs, we gave them 2 years EACH with a Democratic House and Senate Majority.
That is 16 years of Democratic Presidents and only 4 years with Democratic Congress
But, why don't we have affordable health care, affordable college?
Why haven't we raised the minimum wage?
HERE's YOUR ANSWER
Since 1995
25 years
We've ONLY given EACH Democratic President 2 YEARS with a House and Senate Majority.
The GOP held the House, for 20 out of 25 years
The GOP held Congress for 6 yrs under Clinton
The GOP held the House for 6 yrs under Obama
Bush got 6 years with a GOP majority congress.
People still wonder why we've had no progress?
Yet, they still want to blame the Democrats for the slow progress.
If they really wanted change, it would be so easy….
Left Wing Voters and young voters, the answer is so simple.
In the elegant words of John F. Kennedy
"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
VOTE!!!!!
VOTE in every fucking election you can find.
THAT, is how you get change.
The Left talks about the New Deal all the time, what they fail to mention is the overwhelming Democratic majority of roughly 70% Democratic House and Senate for most of the 12 years FDR was in office.
The New Deal took 3 Congressional Terms to pass
1933 73rd Congress
1935 74th Congress
1937 75th Congress
73rd Congress 1933 to 1935
Senate
Democrats: 60 / 62.5%
Republicans 35 / 36.5%
House Averaging roughly for 2 year term
Democrats 309 / 72.4%
Republicans 113 / 26.4%
74rd Congress 1935 to 1937
Senate
Democrats: 72 / 75%
Republicans 22 / 22.9%
House Rough Average for 2 year term
Democrats 308 / 73.7%
Republicans 100 / 23.9%
75rd Congress 1935 to 1937
Senate
Democrats: 74 / 77.1%
Republicans 18 / 18.8%
House Rough Average for 2 year term
Democrats 324 / 76.1%
Republicans 89 / 20.9 %
Under FDR the Democrats had a HUGE majority in the House and Senate, and they kept it for that 12 yrs.
You hand a majority like that in the House and Senate for 8 years under any Democratic President and do it consistently, and you'll see change on an epic scale. Yet, sadly, Liberals and the young always seem to abandon the Democratic Presidents the next midterm after they are elected.
Yes, I know the argument I will hear next, “But, Obama had a supermajority and still didn’t pass our progressive policy dreams.”
That is bullshit!!
Obama did NOT have the supermajority that people claim.
Robert Byrd and Ted Kennedy both got sick when Obama was sworn in, always leaving Obama 1 or 2 votes short of a supermajority.
So, now, do you understand, Democrats don’t like incremental change, we are working with what we have, and doing the best we can.
Democrats would love to have Universal Healthcare, a higher minimum wage, more regulations, stronger unions, affordable college, better education opportunities, etc.. etc.. and we would have LOVED for climate change to have been handled by now, but with the GOP getting in the way, and young and Liberal voters not showing up when we need them to so those issues have not been handled, and we lost a lot of precious time in helping people and our climate.
I hope you will think about this the next time you hear that Democrats don’t care about the average American, or that Democrats abandoned the working class, thoughts like that only help the GOP.
By the way.. you know who wants you to think that the Democrats are corrupt?
The Republicans
Do you know who wants you think that the Democrats are NOT really that different from the Republicans?
The Republicans
Who wants you to believe that Democrats and Republicans are 2 sides of the same coin?
The Republicans
Who wants you to believe that voting doesn't really matter anyway?
The Republicans
That your vote doesn't really count?
Republicans.
Cuz, they have NOTHING to offer, so they need voters to believe that Democrats are no different, and unfortunately, too many of you are falling for it.
In the elegant words of ME, altering JFK’s quote:
~ "Ask not what your Democratic President can do for you, ask what you can do for your Democratic President."
Give him or her a massive Congressional Majority. That is how you will see change on a monumental level.
As RoIn said in the comments below:
We have to get past this notion that change is about one election, and one election only. Change involves putting one foot after another continuously. There is no instant gratification in politics.
That is so true, and it would be great if more voters would start to understand this.
