Yesterday, I appeared on AM Joy to discuss Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's belated issuance of a statewide stay-at-home order. His excuse for the dangerous delay of the order was that he had just learned that asymptomatic carriers of the novel coronavirus could spread the disease. Well, that’s not credible: the CDC announced in mid-February that asymptomatic carriers were a big concern, and the Governor’s top staff were told the same weeks ago.
So, why the bald-faced lie? Cowardice.
You see, what we are witnessing is the naked exposure of the 40-year fallacy Republican ideologues have been force-feeding this country. Kemp could not look into the camera and admit to Georgians that his Republican swagger -- that arrogant, uninformed “Don’t Tread On Me” go-it-aloneism -- had put Georgians’ lives at risk and prolonged the economic pain we will suffer as a result of delay. So he lied about it because stupidity might be excusable, arrogance is not.
