This week, we're helping to provide hands-on materials for science and math lessons that will facilitate some North Carolina and Florida elementary school students’ learning at home during the pandemic. We hope that readers who support quality public school education will help these teachers and students by sharing or supporting our featured projects.
The Inoculation Project is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund science and math projects for red-state public schools in low-income neighborhoods. As always, our conduit is DonorsChoose.org, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools.
Here is DonorsChoose.org’s message about the current situation:
Coronavirus Update: Thank you for your continued support of teachers; they need us right now! We are working closely with teachers and will fulfill all funded projects on the timeline that is best for their school.
Let’s help this North Carolina elementary school teacher whose first DonorsChoose project sent summer learning supplies to her 2019-2020 second graders to help them transition to third grade. Her second project will help her incoming second graders.
MAIN PROJECT
Resources: Help me give my students instructional materials that they missed at the end of first grade!
Economic need: Nearly all students from low‑income households
Location: Northwest Elementary School, Kinston, North Carolina
Total: $292.47
Still Needed: $292.47 $198.94
Teacher’s Comments from Mrs. Stroud:
My Students: Hello! I am a second grade teacher at a Title I school in Eastern North Carolina. The upcoming second grade students have missed over 9 weeks of face-to-face instruction from their first grade teachers due to school closing on March 15th. They are currently learning virtually at home. The students who have internet access are learning through an iPad app called SeeSaw.
I am hoping to provide my future second grade students with first grade instructional materials that they missed due to the closing of school.
My Project: I want to be able to provide my upcoming second graders with the resources that they will need to have a successful school year. The math, reading, social studies, and science resources that will be purchased will target objectives taught at the end of first grade.
With the uncertainty of how the beginning of the next school year will look, the materials will be used for online learning.
By donating to this project, you will provide my students with opportunities to learn the objectives that they missed at the end of their first grade year.
The math resources will include materials focused on telling time, identifying money, and partitioning shapes. Reading resources will include materials focused on poetry and point of view. Science resources will be related to plants and animals and their needs. Lastly, the social studies materials that will focus on digital citizenship.
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
Although it will probably take us several weeks to help push this project over the finish line, we will be giving each of these students the materials to complete 50 hands-on science projects during the summer. Project cancelled by the teacher.
LONG-TERM PROJECT
Project: Hands-On Science At Home! (cancelled by the teacher)
Resources: Help me give my students some hands-on science experiments they can do with their families while safely social distancing.
Economic need: Nearly all students from low‑income households
Location: Fort White Elementary School, Fort White, Florida
Total: $863.15
Still Needed: $398.74 $305.21
Teacher’s Comments from Mrs. Carr:
My Students: Our school is closed to the public for the remainder of the school year. This has been an absolutely incredible group of 3rd graders that were so eager to learn. So many bonds were formed with me and their peers. We were like a family and through that the students were excelling. Now, students are at home doing packets of work assigned by our county. The packets have excellent review material, but it would be great to send them some fun, hands-on science experiments that they can do with their families.
My Project: Each student will be mailed a science kit to their homes where they are staying safe with their families. Each of these kits contains 50 science projects and almost every item they need to complete the projects. Many of my students have siblings, so the entire family can spend some fun, educational time together. [emphasis added] This project would really help my students feel loved, because they are so loved! It will also continue their education during this stressful time. As an adult, we have a little bit of control, but the students have very little. This will make this time much more memorable in a positive way. Any help would be appreciated!
Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
Both of last week’s projects were completed with a huge assist from our readers! Here are the teachers’ thank you notes:
Nonfiction Readers!
Thank you so much for donating to this project! I am excited to get new books into my students hands. These books are exciting and engaging! My students will love to read these with their families over the summer.
These last few weeks have been difficult for all of us. Knowing that I can help them continue their learning over the summer makes me very happy!
With gratitude,
Mrs. Miller
Pre-K Plays Matters While Learning Math Concepts!
Thank you so much for your generous contributions to make this project be able to be funded. I am greatly appreciative of each and every donor. You are all amazing individuals and I'm blessed to have you support my efforts with my classroom. Thank you so much for your kindness!
With gratitude,

Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science push in conservative America by funding science and math projects in traditionally red-state classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose.org, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.
Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund science or math projects, preferably in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required!
Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 831! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.org.
