A Harris-Bident ticket might be America’s best chance to preserve our democratic republic.
Kamala Harris would be our first female President, boasting a mixed heritage of both nationality and color, Just like Barack Obama – and a great majority of the rest of us.
Joe Biden would be the first former President to step down to the Vice Presidency, with or without credit for trying to save our democracy. He would mentor the new President, as no one before in American history, for as long as he is able.
He would counsel her, and provide invaluable insight that can only come from decades of successful public service at the very highest level.
Kamala Harris’s cabinet, governing platform, and ethics would certainly be simpatico with her predecessor. Joe Biden would offer exclusive insight on any and every issue, especially foreign policy, which Harris could accept or reject. They would be a team through the next four years, God Willing.
America would be breaking new wind with a President changing office, either before or after an election. But there are precedents.
President John Quincy Adams lost to Andrew Jackson in 1828, and won a House seat in 1830, He won re-election nine times, serving in Congress until he passed, from a stroke on the floor of the House chamber, in 1848.
President Andrew Johnson, who succeeded to the presidency after Lincoln was assassinated, lost the nomination in 1868 and was forced into retirement. In 1875, the Tennessee legislature picked him to fill its vacant U.S. Senate seat, which he held until dying of a stroke shortly thereafter.
President William Howard Taft lost his re-election bid in 1912. When a U.S. Supreme Court seat became vacant in 1921, he was appointed by President Warren G. Harding, later becoming Chief Justice from 1921 until 1930, when he died of complications of heart disease, high blood pressure, and inflammation of the bladder.
People die. But they’re not necessarily done before they go the way of all things.
Joe Biden can serve his country best by dropping down to VP, to Kamala’s second in command, as a real-life Yoda. He, like all of us, can do nothing about the effects of aging. But until he’s incapable of serving, Joe Biden should continue working to protect “We the People.” As he’s always done.
A Harris-Biden ticket can win, and lead a blue wave in local elections. Kamala’s public positions on reproductive and female health rights, and fighting to address inequality, will resonate.
She can stimulate the fight against authoritarianism and fascism, reprising Spock’s famous, life-sacrificing ideology: ‘The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”
The few are the rich and powerful, e.g. Donald Trump, at least two or three of the nine SCOTUS judges, the Heritage Foundation, the Federalist Society, media owners, and so many corporate executives .
We must defeat them to take care of the many. Joe Biden can help, by passing the torch to Kamala Harris.
A Harris-Biden ticket should be unbeatable.
