Putting Poverty Back On The Agenda

We live in the richest nation in the world, yet 37 million Americans live in poverty. They make up 12.7% of our population, the highest percentage in the developed world.

These numbers paint a bleak picture.

Under the Bush Administration 5.4 million more people have fallen below the poverty line. Despite the brief period of discussion following Katrina, this has mostly gone unnoticed. The debate around poverty has mostly taken place in the academy and has been lacking from the public sphere. Our nation is in desperate need of leadership on this issue.

Follow me below to see how two Democratic Presidential candidates have taken steps to fill this void and have brought the fight against poverty back onto the agenda.

With the tenth anniversary of "the end of welfare as we know it" on the horizon, the New York Times is reporting that the NYC welfare rolls have reached a record low.

The number of New York City residents receiving public assistance fell to 402,281 last month, the lowest number since December 1964, at the start of President Lyndon B. Johnson's war on poverty, and a decline of nearly two-thirds from its peak of nearly 1.2 million in March 1995, officials announced yesterday.

While some circles are cheering the news and searching for someone to thank (Bush? Bloomberg? Guiliani? Clinton?), there is much more to this story.

As you all hopefully know, today is World AIDS Day. I'm writting this diary for us to have a space to discuss this important issue.

There are currently more than 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the world, and more than 3 million people have died in this year alone.

After a recount, it seems as if right-wing voter turn out has allowed Jim Crow language to remain in the Alabama Constitution.

From THE DECATUR DAILY:

"An unofficial recount total shows that Amendment 2 did fail to pass, as was expected. Alabama law called for a recount because the first round of counting on Election Day was so close.

The tiny margin that caused the loss at the polls also caused Alabama to lose face. Because the proposed amendment failed, there remain in our constitution words that should embarrass most Alabamians.

If a few more people had faith in our Legislature to vote for passage, our constitution would no longer have language that calls for segregated schools and poll taxes. It would also have seen a 1956 amendment removed that includes language saying there is no constitutional right to an education at public expense in Alabama, language inserted to further disenfranchise blacks. "
